Amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the market is on high alert over the risk of a Babel-Mandeb Strait closure. As the vital chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the sole southern gateway to the Suez Canal, the strait handles approximately 12% of global maritime trade and nearly 30% of Asia-Europe container traffic. A full blockage would trigger systemic shocks to China’s export supply chains targeting the EU, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Located between Yemen and Djibouti, the Babel-Mandeb is an indispensable node on the shortest maritime route for Chinese goods bound for the EU, Mediterranean, and North African markets. Under normal conditions, voyages from Chinese ports via the Red Sea and Suez Canal to major European ports take 25–30 days. If the strait closes, nearly all container ships, bulk carriers, and chemical tankers will be forced to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope at Africa’s southern tip.

Route changes bring two direct cost surges: first, voyage duration extends by 10–15 days, with fuel consumption rising by roughly 40%; second, war risk premiums for the high-risk Red Sea surge, combined with carriers’ diversion surcharges, pushing total maritime logistics costs up 30%–70%.

Impacts vary across export categories:

1, Bulk chemicals, food additives, and washing raw materials: With low unit value and scale-dependent shipments, these goods bear the brunt of rising logistics costs. Food-grade materials with shelf-life constraints also face quality risks from prolonged sea voyages.,

2, Dangerous goods: Available vessel capacity tightens further; some carriers refuse Red Sea cargoes, worsening booking difficulties.

Supply chain experts warn of high uncertainty in the strait’s situation. Even without a full closure, persistent security threats will keep shipping premiums elevated. Export enterprises must continuously monitor Middle East geopolitics, conduct cost calculations and risk hedging, lock in order prices reasonably, and avoid operational losses from sustained freight hikes.

For any purchasing needs, please feel free to contact Tianjin Sino Chemical, and we will answer your questions promptly.
