Reasons for the Rise in Sodium Chlorite Prices

Reasons for the Rise in Sodium Chlorite Prices

Core Driver: High Cost -raw material

Sodium chlorate, a primary raw material for sodium chlorite, has recently been trading at relatively high price levels, which has directly driven up the production costs of sodium chlorite. Industry data indicates that these elevated sodium chlorate prices have led to an approximately 8.1% year-on-year increase in the production costs for sodium chlorite.

Supply Side: Stricter Environmental and Safety Controls

In late August 2026, the launch of autumn environmental and safety inspections led to tighter regulations on corrosive hazardous chemicals. Consequently, production capacity utilization for high-purity solid sodium chlorite was reduced to 65%, resulting in early signs of tightening supply for high-end products.

Demand Side: Approaching Peak Season

Sodium chlorite is entering its traditional "Golden September, Silver October" peak season. In August, high temperatures caused work stoppages for outdoor water infrastructure upgrades and denitrification projects, keeping the operating rate in the water treatment sector at only around 60% and resulting in relatively weak demand. However, as temperatures subside, water infrastructure projects across various regions are resuming, and demand for upgrades to wastewater treatment plants is beginning to materialize. Simultaneously, the arrival of autumn/winter orders in the textile industry has spurred a clear recovery in the essential demand for high-purity solid sodium chlorite used in the bleaching of high-end fabrics. The simultaneous momentum from these two major downstream sectors—water treatment and textiles—forms the demand-side foundation for the price increases.

Market Outlook and Notes

The aforementioned industry report projected (as of late August 2026) that during the peak season from September to November, prices for liquid sodium chlorite would rise by approximately 3.5%–5.0%, while prices for high-purity solid-grade sodium chlorite would increase by about 3.0%–4.0%. Beyond November, as outdoor projects in northern regions conclude, the market is expected to shift toward a phase of high-level fluctuation.
